Replacement of AMM, How much should it cost? 200 1984

My friend has recently discovered that the AMM is bad on his '86 240 DL. He took it to the local 76, where he gets his work done, and they quoted him about $500 for parts and labor. He told me that he would do the work himself, but that the part alone listed at $296. I know that AMM's are expensive, but is $300 a good price for a new one? and why would the shop charge 3.5 hours of labor to install an AMM? Just trying to clear some stuff up. thanks.
