Speedometer intermittent 200 87

For the past year, my speedometer (and odometer) works intermittently. Appears totally random, and frequency of failure rises (now works only about 5% of time). I assume my '87 240DL is electronically (no cable, right?).

Any idea where the sensor is? Could be a loose connection at sensor? My fear is it's in the dashboard assembly. Any ideas would be welcome.
