motor oil for cold starting 200 1980

My car has > 200k on the engine. I've heard that lower weight (eg 0W-30) better lubricates the engine at start-up. As I understand, start-up, when there's little or no motor oil lubrcating the engine, is when most engine wear occurs. I want to prolong the life of the engine, therefore, by lubricating the engine on start-up. I'm reluctant to use synthetic oils because of the risk of creating oil leaks. Any ideas?
