Exhaust Fumes 700 1988

I reciently replaced the exhaust system on my 745 GLE (Wagon)from the Cat back. After complaining to the shop about a rattling noise in the exhaust along with strong fumes coming inside, they found that my Catalytic converter was completely shot. I had another shop put an after market Catalytic converter on. Rather than ordering the Direct Fit converter with pipe, I agreed to have them weld on a new Cat in place of the old. The new Cat has a very strong smell like the old one which literally fell apart when they dropped it. I have confirmed that there are no leaks in the system, but continue to get a slight smell inside the car. In addition, when parking the car in the garage the smell is very strong almost to the point of burning your nostrils. Have I just purchased an extremely inferior Cat? I have also checked the tail gate on the car to see if the seal is tight enough. I closed a sheet of paper in the tail gate and noticed on the exhaust side the paper pulls out very easy. The tail gate seals appear to be in good condition although not very tight. Is there a way to adjust the tail gate so as to pull it in tighter to the seal?
