CR-814 radio static problems 900 93

I've got an annoying problem with my CR-814 radio. Whenever I adjust the volume, I get a lot of static out of my right speakers and then I have to futz with the knob a lot just to get them to stay on. Is this a common problem with Volvo radios? I'm thinking it may be a loose/dirty volume knob connection, but I'm not sure if the unit is serviceable or what to look for. I have the optional 6-disc CD in the back, and the system's pretty sweet when it works. I can't really afford to replace it.
