We own several Volvos in our family and a few years ago I became interested in doing the repairs myself, for various reasons, same as everyone else here I guess. I have a few questions about Brake work and Valve adjustments. I have never done either type of repair and have some anxiety about whether this can be done by a non mechanic reasonably well and without much aggravation or frustration?
I suppose part of my concern is because brakes are a safety related item and you have to get it done properly, or it can present dangers. And two, Valve adjustment work is critical in the sense of not damaging the engine. Years ago I learned that too tight adjustments to valves could result in blowing the engine. Also, I see many generic types of valve tools (KD and Lisle brands), in addition to the Volvo Special Service Tools, and the choices seem overwhelming. Which ones are best, which are not as good? I remember reading a post one time a few years ago from a guy who owned a Toyota and he said he never found a valve compressor he liked and thought pliers worked just as well. He claim to have tried many different kinds. We also own Ford trucks and Toyota vehicles, and I would like to buy tools that will work on both to save money, if possible. Is this feasible - doable?
I would like to hear from novices (do it yourself people) especially, who have been in my position, and have either decided not to do it and why, or did try it and what they think after having done it? Would do it again or not? Mechanics do this everyday and I already anticipate them responding with a "piece of cake" feeling about this simple work for them. I seem to be subjected to Murphys Law more than other members of my family. Maybe I just do more things myself and it seems that way. But many of the repairs I have attempted in the manuals have not exactly gone by the book.
Whatever you think, details or general comments. I'm not exactly jumping right into this tomorrow, but I would like to get my feet wet sometime in the near future. I will no doubt post more specific questions before I attempt the work. Thanks, Bruce
