EGR- Can It Be Disabled 200 1991

Since there are no emissions tests in my area, and I have a 2-4-1 code indicating an EGR problem on my 91 245, I was wondering if I could trick the ECU or bypass it to get the Engine light to go out and get the fault code to clear, the car does idle a little less than perfect and I can live with that, the gas mileage is fair (21-26), I figure I could do without the EGR system if the ECU would allow it.
