airbags still effective 700 1990

Hi:

Have a '90 740 GLE wagon with a driver's side airbag. I understand that Volvo is saying that after ten years one might need to have a new airbag installed because the older one may no longer work. Does anyone have experience (direct or heard-of) as to whether an airbag of this age (does; did; did not) work in actual incidence of a front end collision?

Look forward to hearing from anyone with actual knowledge or experience...

Any strongly held opinions also appreciated!
