90 240 DL standard transmission is jerky 200 1990

My 1990 240 DL standard transmission station wagon has has a jerky first gear. My wagon has acted like this since it was new. It now has 100K and is no better or no worse. The problem is only in first. The rest of the gears are fine. Once in a while, it is so bad that it feels like the rear end want to hop. Usually it is just annoying, and if I am very careful it can be almost smooth. Any one else ever have this problem? I've driven several other standards that were smooth in fist so I don't think the problem is my driving skills.
