brickers:
okay, so I finally figure out how to get the blasted floor panel off in the 1985 745t wagon and gained access to the primary pump panel/primary pump. Sidenote: that pull towards you floorboard tongue method isn't intuitive at all...
My primary pump is a rotten, rusted mess (at least on the outside). All the metal hoses coming out are rusted, the sender for the fuel gauge has literally rotted off (the whole bracket is dangling free), and the primary filler hose has asmall split on it, though it isn't leaking.
My questions are as follows:
1) I don't have any socket wrenches with me (I'm in VT). Do I try to take this thing off with a regular wrench? Seems kind of nasty to do without a socket wrench given the amount of space I'm dealing with.
2) Where should I go to buy a pump? Should I buy a new one? I usually buy gear from thepartsbin.com, they have decent prices, shipping's free over $50, and it arrives in 2-3 days max. Any other recs for good prices?
3) If I DO buy a new one, what parts does the unit come with? If the internals are solid (seems like it might just bethe outside that's corroded), can I just replace the cap without buying the whole assembly? Do any of the hoses come with it? Does the primary pump assmebly include the outer door with the metal hose brackets, electrical pick-ups, etc?
4) My gauge has been broken and I've been keeping the tank full. Is there a way to drain fuel so I can work on the primary pump or do I just go for a drive?
5) What's the prep for taking the unit out? Do I need to be prepared to drain the hoses off the primary first? The unit is higher than the main pump but lower than the engine, so I'm concerned fuel might rush back at me in the lines.
Thanks in advance for the help! This is my first major mechanical job on my own, so I'm understandably a little nervous. Additionally, I'm on a mountain in VT and this is my only form of transportation. REALLY don't want to screw this up and and up stranded... oy.
Thanks,
Rick
