need help dignosing (fuel pump)? 200 '79

Have been experiencing intermittant cutting out. NOT the same as in-tank pump failure (i have replaced before). I need to know what the syptoms of bad fuel pump Vs. air intake prob. vs. bad relay. I have noticed the idle seemed to start to race a bit. Found and replaced a split (intake?) hose. This seemed to help, but not fix the cutting out. Cutting out feels like fuel, not disengage or spark. The local shop is too busy to see my car this week and my family NEEDS th Volvo. Thanks.
