loose steering 200 1977

The steering rod on the drivers side of my 1977 245 is beginning to have excessive movement in the normal travel of the wheel. When driving a slight delay in response is noticable, when you grab the wheel and try to move it like the steering wheel would, it has several millimeters of free movement instead of being solid. The movement is somewhere inside the boot on the steering rack and fluid came out of the boot when I removed it to take a look. I was just wondering whether it is likely(as I suspect) that the steering rack itself needs to be replaced? Is there a chance only the steering rod is loose?

Thanks,

WRC
