Changed oil--oil filter was dry 700 1987

Hello

We changed the oil today on our 87 740. We have owned the car since it was new. We now have 270K on it. We have changed the oil ourselves every 5K. This was the first time the filter showed no signs of oil except maybe a table spoon. It looked really dry. We changed it previously in March. The engine has oil pressure which you can see with the oil cap off. Has anyone heard of this or experienced anything like this. After completing the new oil change, I removed the filter for a look. The oil new filter is completely full. Thanks for your thoughts.
