clunk noise 700 1988

I get a single clunk from the front end of our 745T under conditions that reverse the direction of force on the wheels while turning after a stop. It'll always do it when I back out of the garage (rear goes left) and then drive away (turning right). I can't do it with straight-line start and stops. Occasionally it makes a noise on a bump, but not often. Outer tie rod ends are pretty new; everything else is original. However, I've pried, pushed shaken and beat on the joints and parts, and it all seems tight. I'd bet on ball joints, but they won't budge when I pry on 'em (jacked up, long pipe under tire). With it on the ground, I can't see any slop in the steering, either. What IS this clunk?
