Ball Joint Extractor 900 1995

Volvo 940 Non turbo

I'm thinking of changing the ball joints of my car because it thuds everytime it goes over bumps and on uneven stretch of the road. I need to know if a universal type ball joint extractor can assist in removing the ball joints from the struts, or do I need to get those special Volvo ball joints extractor? Also can a tie rod extractor do the job?
