squeeky window 900 '96

on the wifes newsed '96 960, the rear windows undoubtedly had NEVER been lowered. when we press the button to lower them, we get awful squeeking sound. it's not glass scratching or the motor. it sounds as if something is in the track or missing. can i posibly put some silicone oil on the tracks to help this or will that harm something? any ideas?/
