Cleaning sheepskin seat covers

My 17 year old seat covers have never been cleaned (ugh, I know!). I plan to take them off and clean them, but didn't know the best way to do so. I thought of putting in the washing machine on hand-wash cycle after letting them soak for a bit. Any suggestions?
