Wacky steering 200 1984

Just had my front wheels aligned(sp?) and I mentioned to the folks doing it that when going around a corner my steering wheel would not return to center. That is, after letting go of the steering wheel the car would not then start to go in a stright line but rather continue in an arc. My question are these: could this be caused by a powersteering pump on its last legs? (mines been screeming at me the last three months) Could it be the rack and pinion going out? and if so, Could I ignore it and still drive my car around in relative saftey? and if not, Could a determaind do it yourselfer do it? (I can not afforrd to pay someone else to replace a 200$ part) Anyways other then that the Battle wagon seems to be handling and driving like the best that it is. Thanks for all the help and info before hand.
