speedo cable replacement: hints or tricks? 200 1982

Greetings all,
I have an '82 GLT (M46) that needs a new speedo cable. The speedometer, odometer, and trip counter all have all gone kaput. Local Volvo specialists confirm the cable needs replacement, but I can no longer afford their high priced talents. Any special tools needed?; have heard a special Allen key simplifies removal from the transmission...Hints would be greatly appreciated.
