Hello all, I have a 1969 142 with 340K+ miles that is making an awful humming noise when I drive. It is definitley coming from the front. Its only audible starting at about 35mph but you can feel the vibration in the steering wheel at lower speeds. Also, when braking or making a gradual right turn (only right turns, not left turns), the noise completely dissappears. At first inspection, both ball joint ends on both steering rods were pretty shot. There was about 1/2" of play from one side to the other. Seemed easy, I figured this was causing the excess vibration. After I replaced the ball joints on the center rod, put in two new steering rods for the left and right, and installed new idler arm bushing everything was tight, no play. I still had the noise, not even slightly better. Then I figured it was the tires, maybe out of balance, so I took it in and not only had the tires balanced, but put two new tires on in the front. Still the noise remains. After searching through this board, I read a similar problem that was caused by bearings needing grease or re-packing. Well I re-packed both bearings (it really did need it) and it still hums, although slightly less now. I'm just about out of ideas and don't know what to do next. This has become a mission for me, and after getting a taste of piece and quiet (while making right turns), I can't stand this noise. Any help, no matter how irrelevant, would be greatly appreciated.
