91 240DL Sedan

My rear view mirror broke at the "ball and socket". I am attempting to repair it using rocket science (long story). My question is....how does one release the plastic cover that covers the bolts/screws that hold the "arm" onto the roof? I dont want to break the thing, I've tried prying, sliding over and pulling etc. On my 90 740 GLE, I can't seem to keep the cover on.....on Heidi, I can't get it off.
