dash lights- electrical woes... 200 1987

I have an '87 240DL wagon, and the instrument lights recently stopped working. According to the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, these circuits are related to the lighting for the shift indicator- which has also stopped working. Managed to get the instrument cluster out, and swapped out the bulbs. No change. I have found a dangling wire- white w/ a red stripe and a female spade connector. Appears the same as the white/red that comes out the back of the rheostat that controls the panel lighting brightness. Seems obvious that this would be my problem, EXCEPT I cannot for the life of me find a male connector begging for this wire to be plugged onto. Nothing on the back of the insttrument cluster. Can anyone give me clues, or am I reduced to tearing apart the entire dash. ...shudder...

Thanks in advance for any and all advice.

John Mc.
