Our 1986 240DL Wagon was giving us fits shifting into overdrive. (has auto trans.) Not too long after we purchased the car, (used) I had to replace the overdrive relay which fixed the problem for a while. A few months ago, it wouldn't shift into OD until it was driven for about 30 minutes at highway speed. Then, it wouldn't go into OD at all.
I took voltage readings at the connector that goes to the overdrive solenoid, and found the proper voltage present. When I checked the solenoid coil resistance, however, I had infinite ohms, indicating the coil had failed.
I replaced the solenoid and the two o-ring seals - Volvo P/N 1239928-3, 1239834-3, and 1239835-0, and all was right again with my brick.
So, before you replace your solenoid, check the resistance of the coil (my new one had a 12.5 ohm resistance) and all the other things recommended on this board. The solenoid is expensive, in the range of $200.00+.
