If the timing belt is off three teeth on the crankshaft, will the car still run? 700 1991

I am changing the timing belt on a '91 740 with a 230F engine that I purchased last year. The timing marks will not line up as outlined in the Haynes manual(up to an '88). Is it possible that the prior owner incorrectly installed it? If so...would the car even run? At present, the car runs fine. I am not sure...it may run better if I install the belt according to the manual. All of the marks seem to line up except for the crankshaft. It seems like it is three or four teeth off from what the manual (as well as the diagram on this site) shows. The crankshaft pulley doesn't line up on TDC. Should I align the new belt correctly or install it the way the old one was? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
