strut removal 200 1982

Hello,

I have a question regarding the removal of the strut. I need to take the diesel springs off of the strut assembly but I can't seem to undo the top nut. I went to Sears and bought a deep offset wrench to hold the bolt so I could turn the nut. This was shown in the Haynes manual. Am I missing something or doing something wrong. Thanks for help with this frustrating problem.
