Water pump 700 1990

I've just been told that the water pump on my 1990 Volvo GL wagon needs replacing by a garage mechanic near my home. They don't do this and referred me to another place. I found the part on-line for 42 bucks. I don't know much about car repair, am willing to learn, but is this something I can do on my own? Thanks.
