Estimate cost of auto trans repair?

I have an '82 GLE 264, 3-sp auto. Park works. It doesn't engage anything else, and the linkage and fluid level is fine. The trans makes no noise when trying to engage a gear. Am I going to need a replacement auto box, or is there hope? Anyone ever tear one of these down? I cringe when thinking about the repair cost.....
