Heat/radiator/water pump question: HELP! 700 1986

Bricksters: Hi, all! My usually reliable Brunhilde has 'gone South' on me, at least as regards heat. I have a rad fluid leak, haven't pinpointed it, even after having Mr. Indie Mech do a pressure test (tested fine)...nonetheless, I am losing coolant. Topped off the empty reservoir this afternoon, went for a drive, then upon my midnight return, had no heat for the first 20 minutes; then medium heat for 5 minutes, then no heat the remaining 15 minutes, fan set to 3 or 4, heat-level set all the way to the right = highest setting, but only after 10 minutes of driving, which is usually more than enough time to get the system hot enough to blow hot air on demand. This is on the manual 'slider' heat control system. usually reliable as stated, but not really needed until this cold evening. Any hints, suggestion, ideas? I will be towing the car (all 4 wheels OFF the ground) about 2,000 miles over the next 3 or 4 days (I'm an optimist), and would like some likely scenarios to mull over until I get to where a mechanic can check 'er out. Any and all help gratefully accepted and much appreciated. BTW, a scheduled t'stat replacement (I've had the car almost 3 years now, and not only have not done any rad/fluid stuff before, I haven't even checked to see when the PO last had it done) and fluid flush had to be postponed due to a hurried-up departure schedule; I have already got the new t'stat in hand (special order, of course, for a D24T), just haven't got the time to flush/install until the weekend/end of trip. Thanks, folks.--PD
