Rear End interchangeability 700 1987

I have a rear end problem on my N/A 87 740 GLE Auto. It has been whining and grinding for about 18 months. Appreantly, the PO ran it out of fluid.
Anyway, I have access to a 90 240 DL N/A Auto at my local U-Pick. Volvo's are quite rare at salvage yards in my location and this is the first one I have seen in the area salvage yards.
QUESTION : Will the 240 rear end fit in my 740?? I AM able to cut and re-weld brackets if necessary.
