Clutch pedal is stiff and creaky. 200 1982

The clutch pedal on my 240 seems too stiff and creaky. It is the cable actuated version. How do I go about lubricating and freeing up the linkage? Should I lubricate the cable and with what? Any information or guidance on this topic would be greatly appreicated.
