Strange squealing sound 240DL wagon 200 1990

Lately, when accelerating, I sometimes hear a loud screeching/squealing sound, that seems to come from somewhere under the front hood, as if in a straight line from the gas pedal. It also continues for as long as I am pressing the gas, usually stopping as soon as I take my foot off. This sound only occurs SOMETIMES, and seems always to be when it is very cold combined with wet weather (Boston winter). Can anyone give an idea what it might be, before I take it in and pay to find out? Thanks for any steerage!!!
