Help! Car runs fine when cold, then crappy when warmed up.... 700 1986

I have an '86 740GLE, B230, auto, 170k. In the morning, when it's about 40F outside, the car will start in about 10 seconds and run fine. Once the engine warms up, the fun starts. When I am waiting at a light, it idles very rough and sometimes will stall on it's own. It also will almost stall/surge/almoststall.. If I try to accelerate, it will either completely die or do a temp stall out (RPM's read 0)If I keep with it and cross my fingers it may come back to life and go. When it does go, it will shake and shudder until the RPM's get about about 2200-2500. While this is going on, it's smoking like crazy too. It's usually happening in the dark, but the smoke is black as best as I can tell. Also, when accelerating after a temp stall, it will seem to miss for a fraction of a second, about every 2-3 seconds.(very intermittent, no rythym to it at all) It will do this throughout the RPM range, but it most noticable in the lower RPM's. I think driving in rush hour traffic is also amplifying the symptoms. I've read quite a bit in the FAQ, but I'm not exactly a master mechanic. Here is what has been replaced so far:

Fuel Filter
Plugs, Wires, Distributor/rotor. (Plugs and wires are Bosch parts. These helped, but symptoms returned)

On that note, I did kinda crack the little plug in the distributor. It seemed to fit back in OK, can this be the root of the problem? The smoking almost makes it seem to be running rich.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Tom
