Please help me troubleshoot my poor running 1989 740

When I purchased the car about 1 month ago, fat air intake hose clamp was loose anmaking the hose partially loose also. Ever since I tightened the clamp the car has been running very poorly when it sits overnight, and is cold started in the morning. I loosened the clamp, and the car runs so much better. You would think that it is not getting enough air, but filter is new and all air passages are clear. Also the car doesn't fast idle when it's first started and warming up. This is my first Volvo, but all other cars and trucks I have ever owned (including diesels) always fast idled while warming up. Is this problem related?? Getting back to the main problem, with that hose clamp tight, the idle is very low (400 rpm's)and shakes badly. If you try to clear it out, when you step on the accelerator,it stalls but it will start right back up. The problem persists until the car is warmed up, but doesn't totally go away. New plugs, wires etc.Did I buy a headache? 1989 740gl w/104,000 doesn't seem like alot of miles from what I hear. Anybodys input would be greatly appreciated here or e-mail jeffrad66@aol.com Other than that car held up very nice. Would like to see another 104,000 if possible. Thanks in advance. Jeff
