Heater Core 700 1986

I can smell coolant when driving with the heater on.

Two Questions:
1. Do 700 series heater cores fail often enough that I should not risk putting in a used one?
2. The Haynes manual says to discharge the A/C when replacing the heater core, but nothing about their instructions suggests that you need to remove (or even come near)the A/C evaporator. Is it really necessary to discharge the A/C? How difficult is a heater core replacement on a 740?
