I just replaced both fuel pumps in my 83 245 DL with aftermarket pumps from Autozone ($200 for both pumps and both filters). It was the classic transfer tank pump failure after running out of gas followed by failure of the main pump. The in-tank pump appeared to be identical to the one that was replaced, but it is very loud. With the tailgate and door open I can easily hear it above the exhaust noise, and with the door closed it is clearly unacceptable. I have not reinstalled the carpeted rear deck, which will certainly lower the hum level, but I am concerned.
Is there a normal wearing-in phase after which the noise level drops?
Is it possible I mis-installed it? Maybe pressing against the bottom of the tank or too high so the pump contacts the metal outlet tube (inside the internal rubber connector)? It is unlikely that it is too low, but too high is a definite possibility.
