High altitude problems 200 1982

A curious thing happened yesterday. We set out on a 1200km trip in the trusty 245. It has 266985kms on it but seems to work quite well. As we were entering the Rogers Pass between Golden and Revelstoke BC, at an altitude of I think 1400+ meters we were stopped for some avalanche control. We shut the engine down and sat. After about an hour of waiting I was going to restart the car to warm the interior again. I hit the starter and it cycled several times and wouldn't catch. Again I tried it and it cycled then sputtered. Then it popped. This went on for 5 mins, before the engine finally started and was coaxed to an idle. I have never had this problem before and I was wondering if the altitude had an effect on the fuel mixture and subsequent timing. It was kind of like a flooded senario. Anyone else ever experience this? Other than not shutting off the car next time, are there any ways around this? I guess I could do a double blind as I will be returning by the same route next week. Thanks in advance for your ideas, Chad.
PS, are there any cures for an idle that seems to 'miss' frequently? The car drives well, but without a load has a hiccup in the running.
