Allah Akbar!...front end rebuild....success! 900

It all started when I became jealous of all those out there installing IPD sway bars, ....my 152k four-banger feeling a might sloppy.

I took the board's consensus advice and ordered Boge Turbo-Gas shocks all around, new stabilizer links and bushings, new radius to control arm bushings, new strut mounts and bearings, new ball joints and new tie rods. It made sense, to get the front end to where it should be, before I considered upgrading the ride and changed the characteristics of the car. I got a heck of deal from Nick at FCPGroton on most of the components, and got the shocks mail order. I am out $350.00, plus the cost of the alignment. It's on the rack right now. Any guess what the dealer would charge to do all this?

It took me six hours yesterday, and might have taken less if I had less trouble getting the screw-on cap off the strut. I agree that it is within the realm of most DIY's, but you have to be thoroughly prepared and have the proper tools at your disposal. Three-foot pipe wrenches along with a cold chisel were required to get the cap off the strut tube. I sturdy bench vise is a must.

The car rides and behaves better now, and the rear end stays put. The brake shudder is gone, and tires keep contact better on irregular surfaces. The difference is subtle, but then again it's not, because the improvement in some areas is so dramatic. It rides about the same, just a little 'surer'. Now I know what I liked about the ride when I bought it.

Naturally, now I discovered I need a new water pump (soon) and the engine tray is disintegrating. The valve cover gasket is bad too, leaking, and I am going to need new drive belts. All within the realm of what I am comfortable doing. Easy jobs, easy access for the DIY. Oh, and the drivers side seat heater is on the fritz. Allah akbar!

I love my 940.
