possible fix for NASTY gas smell. 200 1980

I had the gas smell in the car for a long time.
usually, it would get bad when I had less than half a tank of gas.
The people that I bring my volvo to checked the top of the gas tank and near the filler tube but I still would have the gas smell.

Got a tip that it might be because of the gas vent tube about a foot down from the filler cap.
I have a wagon, so I have to lift up that little 2 foot by 1/2 foot plank on the passenger side near the liftgate.

there is a short tube that is glued to the filler tube, and a rubber tube attaches to the top of it.

The tip was to
1. get rid of the gummy stuff and clean the surface. (Do not take the plug out. I used a q-tip and brake cleaner).
2. Apply epoxy around the base. You can use some tape and cardboard to make a epoxy moat of about 3/4 or an inch diameter. the height (thickness) on mine is about 2 mm.

So far, I haven't had the gas smell for a while.
