Air Mass Meter troubles : ( 200 1991

Hi all,

My parents recently got me a used 91' 240 with 190,000 miles on it for a belated 16th Birthday present. It's worked fine for about a week and a half, exept for the fact that it lacked power and the check engine light was on. Last Sunday, I was backing out of my driveway when the engine started to run erratically and suddenly died. I then put the car in park and tried to restart, same thing happened. I then whipped out my trusty hays manual (came with the car) and ran the diagnostic codes. It brought back code 121 for fault in Air mass meter, and then code 221 Fuel systen compensting for extremely rich or extremely lean condition at cruise. After this, I located the Air Mass Meter, unpluged it, and restarted the engine. It did'nt die, but instead ran at an extremely erratic idle. So my questions are, Is it for sure the Air Mass Meter? What could have led to its failure? Does anyone know where to find this part cheap? Is there any way around replacing this part if it is defective? Im kind of a newbie with mechanics, and the only experience I do have is with old American V8s. Any hints or advice relating to getting my car running again would be greatly appriciated. Thanks in advance.
