760 Turbo cuts off on left turns... 700 1987

My '87 760 Turbo wagon, after reaching normal operating temp, cuts off on left turns (fairly consistantly) and while sitting in traffic. It will crank back up, but you have to run the starter until it nearly drains the battery. When it finally decides to run again, it spits and sputters and produces black smoke and a strong presence of gasoline odor. It will run just fine until the very next time you turn the wheel to the left.

To date, I've spent well over $2,000 on repairs at a very reputable "non-dealership" Volvo specialty shop and they have exhausted just about every option. (This is in addition to what the previous owner spent!) This we know: there are no wires interfering with the steering system components, the MAP sensor and nearly every relay has been swapped out with ones known to function correctly, the fuel pumps appear to be working...

I am open to ANY suggestions, especially if you've had or heard of similar problems. I am VERY close to scrapping the car, which for 225K miles looks, rides and except for making left turns, runs strong. The problem is that I have already exceeded 70% of the current value of the car chasing this mysterious problem. As it stands, the car is a death trap and is parked until the problem is fixed.

Thanks,
WILL
