rear suspension question 200 1993

Following the earlier suggestions of some of the seasoned veterans of this list, I am taking a step-by-step approach to resolving some suspension problems on my 93 240 sedan (109K miles). First step was to replace the front struts and rear shocks with Bilstein HD units. The improvement was definitely noticeable. But, there is still a moderate clunk in the rear when crossing large open pavement joints and the occasional pothole. When driving over washboard gravel roads, the clunk becomes a clatter due to the number of jolts the rear suspension is absorbing. Would this clunk/clatter be originating from the rear trailing arm bushings? Kind of sounds like a 20 pound chunk of steel bouncing in the trunk, but everything in there is securely fastened (spare, jack, etc.).

In addition to the above concern, there is another. While the new rear shocks are doing a better job of absorbing potholes, bumps, and the like, there still exists somewhat of a rebound in something under the rear portion of the car when crossing these rough stretches of road. It's kind of difficult to describe, but it feels like a 2x/3x rebound each time a pothole is encountered. I doubt that the rebound is from the new shock. It is probably doing its job fine. Could this rebound be the driveshaft "flopping" up and down slightly when the jolt is encountered? Is this a common problem that is easily repaired or?

Once these two matters are taken care of, it will be easier to isolate any problems that might still be present in the front suspension, including adding braces to stiffen things up a bit.

Again, thanks very much for everyone on this lists generosity in sharing their experiences and advice. It's greatly appreciated!
