Alternator Swap / Denso for Bosch? 700 1991

I am pretty sure my internal voltage regulator is going on my Denso Alt. Can I mount a Bosch in it's place with an external volt regulator? My voltage drops suddenly from 14 to 9 volts. There is nothing running that could draw that much. Could a ground problem cause this or is it more likely to be the volt regulator. Any way to test? There is no pattern or hint that this drop in voltage will occur. Not fun after dark! HA!
