Daughter was stuck in San Clemente, California with an '80 244 with a charging problem. She was referred to a mechanic who "cares for" a friends Mercedes. After he and I talked several times, he was going to replace the faulty part with a GM alternator that he thought he could make fit. Labor was $100, cost of alternator not clear. He said he couldn't get the right one, even in San Diego. More talking - he didn't know where the voltage regulator wasso I figured I didn't want him fooling around with the car. There are 3 Bosch outlets in San Diego. It was cheaper for me to get a voltage regulator here (Salt Lake City area) for an alternator I had in the garage, fly to San Clemente, install it (45 minutes installation including changing clothes and getting the parts and tools out of the suitcase I took with me - the airport in Salt Lake was interested in that). The guy was really ticked. 'seems my daughter knows more about it, just from talking with me, than he did.
