Wheel Bearings? 200 1983

Greetings
Over the past few weeks my 245 has developed a groaning/ whining noise that seems to be coming from the front of the car (not 100% sure). The pitch of the noise is related to road speed. The noise remains when the engine is turned off and the car is moving, in gear or in neutral (auto trans). I'm thinking front wheel bearings. Car has done 170,000 km. What do you think? Any other diagnostic tests I could apply?
