Timing for a high milage 240. 200

Does the factory timing spec hold for a 240 with 200K? I was discussing this with a mechanic, and he suggested that the timing could be adjusted to reduce the pinging. This conversation was some time ago, and I cannot remember the details. Any suggestions? Thanks!
