OK, my 1970 144S will need new tires soon and I would really like to get more up-to-date wider tires then are on there currently. My stock wheels are the 4 1/2" wide ones so I don't think a 185-65R15 tire will fit on this wheel (right now I've got the 165R15's on there).

As far as I can tell, here my options:

1. Get a set of 1971-on 5" wide 140 or P1800 wheels and squeeze the 185's on them (I'm told they fit on a 5" wheel, but bearly). This keeps a somewhat stock appearence (although for a different year/model).

2. Get a set of 5.5" 164 Wheels. This seems to be the best idea, but I have a feeling that finding a set of 1969 or 1970 (since they changed styling of the wheels in 1971) 5.5" 164 wheels is almost impossible. The 1971-on wheels may be easier to find, but they aren't the same style and I've heard trim rings for all 164 wheels are very expensive and hard to find. Also, these slightly wider (and heavier) wheels may make the steering effort increase?

3. Get old 240 Turbo Wheels or another aftermarket 140/240 wheel. Easy to find and the aluminum alloy would probably make the car drive better (less steering effort?), but it just wouldn't be original looking (important to me). I wish I could find a lightweight aftermarket wheel that looked stock and allowed the use of old volvo hubcaps.

4. Keep the stock wheels and stock size tires (165R15). I don't think this is a very safe way to go at high speeds on todays highways, I'd like to go with more "up to date" tires if possible. Maybe I can find 175R15 tires? I know they make a 175R14.

Any other suggestions?
