steering doesn't return after u-turn, plus grinding 200 1992

when i make a u-turn in this car, the wheels and steering wheel don't automatically return to the neutral, straight ahead position after the u-turn is completed. also, there is a sort of a low pitched grinding noise while the car is turning with the wheels all the way turned. this happens in either direction. any ideas?
