Radiator fan stays on 900 1995

Just starting yesterday, my radiator fan remains on for almost 5 minutes after I switch off the engine. The engine also seems to be running hotter than normal. Earlier today, the temperature gauge touched 3/4 for a short time (it normally stays at the 1/2 way mark). Coolant level was between min and max and I topped it up but the problem persists. Does any one have any suggestions as to what may be wrong?
