late ('73) 140 heater valve control leaks onto floor 140-160

The heater valve (which controls the flow into the heater core) leaks on my car (or was than *in* my car...?). It seems that the heater valve of this type was failure prone, judging by looking at two parts cars which had the same problem. It seems an internal diaphram ruptures.
Any advice on updating or replacing this item? It would be ideal of I could do something without having to take the heater core out. It the valve in question integral to the heater core? It looks like it might be, but RPR sell a 240 control that is separate and list it for these cars. The whole function is different- my car has the rotary knob, vacuum-based system and the 240's have a slider and cable. What's involved with the conversion? Can I keep the rotary knob? Does anyone rebuild these vacuum-solenoid valves? Can parts from other makes be used? Anyone have a good working one of these items?- I'd rather keep the rotary-type knob.
