V6 Tranmission - repace/rebuild? ......acceptable cost? 200 1982

I have posted a few times on subjects related to my failed auto. On friday, I'm going to visit my brick at the repair shop. I believe that the trans in my car (a BW55 I'm told) is not all that rare. Any ideas of cost in tearms of what I may be charged for a replacement or rebuilding? Or is replacement a better idea?
ASSESSMENT: The tranny does not engage any gear except park, and I slowly (over a week's time) lost gears. Selecting reverse gave me a forward gear, for a couple of days, then nothing at all. Then it wouldn't shift into 3rd on the highway, then nothing at all.
